Hanoi: progress and challenges
Vietnam's work culture is quite interesting. In addition to their social norms, there are also some interesting customs among Vietnamese workers, such as respect and emotional exchanges among age groups. In the workplace, regardless of class (team leaders and members), young people must respect their elders. If the younger staff correct the older workers at work, they will be reprimanded in the village after returning home. Similar to Koreans, people respect their age and class, and they also represent the simple ethics and traditional social concepts of Vietnamese society. Another phenomenon that attaches importance to interpersonal emotions is that employees only share one cup when drinking water. The factory gives each person a cup for hygiene purposes, but they are still only sharing one cup to express their good friendship with each other.
Another interesting management issue I discovered in Poyun is regarding Taiwanese staff eating separately from Vietnamese workers. In the past visits, I have never seen an example of Taiwanese businessmen dining with Vietnamese employees. Taiwanese businessmen have different eating habits from Vietnamese employees. Some Taiwanese businessmen even send Vietnamese chefs back to Taiwan. Learn to cook Taiwanese food, and divide it into a Taiwanese restaurant and a Vietnamese staff restaurant when dining, and the dishes are naturally different. This kind of segregation creates differences in the management class, which can strengthen the authority of management, but on the contrary, it also increases the sense of alienation between Taiwanese and Vietnamese employees. During this visit, we can feel that the Taiwanese businessmen in North Vietnam want to convey the idea of caring and local cultivation to Vietnamese employees, hoping to make employees feel the sincerity of the company, and then concentrate on helping the company. This concept of pursuing labor-capital harmony may be influenced by the May 13 riots in 2014, or it may be the Vietnamese government's emphasis on labor rights, or it may be the evolution of Taiwanese businessmen in cross-cultural management.
What impressed me most about the visit this morning was the company's initiative to promote social corporate responsibility, most of which was related to sustainable development and green energy living. The local area has also cultivated various programs that have good interaction with the community. In 2012, a social enterprise responsibility committee was set up in the company. In 2015, four social enterprise responsibility reports were issued. Furthermore, The company's long-term development plan in Vietnam is also admirable, as its determination to develop business in emerging markets as well. These admirations are what made this Taiwanese company even more different in the ecology where the average factory cycle of many Taiwanese companies is only more than ten years.
The second Taiwanese company we visited was Yimei Group. During the meeting, Mr. Gao, a member of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee in North Vietnam was also invited to share. Mr. Gao shared with us the hard work spirit of Taiwanese businessmen who want to “metaphorically to bow humbly" when they are abroad. The YiMei Group started with food in Taiwan. Especially when the food safety problem broke out in Taiwan in the past few years, it insisted on the safety of food, which made Yimei Group stand out. However, when the factory was established in 1997, the development of the food industry was quite limited. Because many refined biscuits produced in Taiwan are limited by the local practice of replacing quality to reduce costs, YiMei, which insists on real materials, has many products that cannot be mass-produced or sold in Vietnam and can only produce low-cost rice crackers dessert. Therefore, under the influence of family origin, Yimei Group turned to investing in golf equipment. The group also has CanMei Enterprises to develop the plastic industry.
Therefore, Vice President Wang also said: "If you want to integrate into the local culture, don't build high walls yourself." Learning Vietnamese is also a basic requirement here. After all, it is possible to achieve a basic dialogue to truly understand the ideas of both parties and achieve truly effective communication. "Language ability is a tool, but it is strength to let the team go in the same direction." The traditional industries here seem to reflect the resilience of the Taiwanese who have gradually disappeared in Taiwan.
五、 洪O智 (國立中山大學中國與亞太區域研究所博士班)Hong (Ph.D., Institute of China and Asia-Pacific Region, National Sun Yat-Sen University)
When you come to the industrial zone established by Taiwanese businessmen, although you can find the courtesy it received in the early days, it has a good location. However, compared with the parks established by other countries, it is not difficult to find the overall hardware and equipment. There is still a considerable gap in planning and design, which is also the most unfortunate part of Taiwan's competition with other countries. Recalling what the director of Chilixin mentioned, Taiwan has no competitive advantage over Singapore's model of setting up an industrial zone on the mainland, because the planning and design are too ordinary, and some opportunities are lost in the end. This is the most unfortunate thing.
This is the most distinctive feature of this trip, and there may not be similar arrangements in the future. Therefore, I am very excited to be able to participate in such an event. Observing from their banquets, the food culture is quite diverse. It is a very rare experience for us researchers to be able to walk into ordinary houses.
What I have learned from Taiwanese businessmen:
I visited eight Taiwanese businessmen, and I saw the most difficult thing from every boss: patience and persistence. After all, most people are assigned to work in Vietnam from Taiwan. There are not many Taiwanese staff in their factory. It is inevitable that they will be homesick or uncomfortable with the local environment. They must temporarily sacrifice many people and things they had in the past. Problems encountered in the process, such as difficulties in interacting with employees due to language barriers, must be endured time after time.
Do not look at the world from Taiwan, but look at Taiwan from the world:
It's also very classic, and it blows my mind; indeed. When we go abroad, a mistake we often make was to measure everything in other countries from the perspective of our own country, and even score for them. I realize that this is very bad, when we look at other countries from the perspective of Taiwan, it is easy to lose sight of their uniqueness! And it is also a kind of arrogance, which will be a barrier point for us to integrate into the local area.
Language will always be an important tool for international communication
There was hardly a boss who doesn't mention the importance of language. When Taiwanese businessmen need to communicate with local employees, the effect of translation will definitely be compromised, and they cannot really convey their meaning. Every boss has experienced the process of having a language barrier with the employees, and is also trying to learn the local language. This also shows me the direction that our modern Taiwanese young people can work towards. In response to changes in the general environment and national policies, in addition to practicing basic English skills, if you learn Southeast Asian languages well, you will definitely benefit from it in the future.
The bosses selflessly shared their personal experiences and encouraged us, not only to learn languages well, but also to enhance our legal, financial, and management-related abilities. However, after I returned home, I also put the goal of strengthening the language (English and Vietnamese) and business management professional foundation into my study plan, which helped me to practice my future blueprint.
This visit was very fruitful, and I have endless gratitude to have this opportunity to work for more than a year after graduation, and I can also go outside to open my eyes, meet new friends, visit two universities and six large-scale big compaies. I firmly believe that the achievement of many things lies in whether there is that courageous drive. Going out bravely, coupled with the right time and place, the spirit of unremitting efforts, will definitely be able to break out of your own sky, and not be a canary in a cage.
During this visit to Vietnam, I not only saw the operation of many factories, but also obtained a lot of information about Vietnam. It is impossible to obtain such incisive and accurate information in Taiwan. Due to the media in Taiwan, the accuracy of reporting is not high. Therefore, to understand the local customs, you can only actually visit and experience it for yourself.
Taiwanese businessmen have established chambers of commerce in Vietnam, and occasionally hold gatherings together to share the difficulties and experiences they have encountered. Although it seems that Taiwanese businessmen cooperate with each other, it is inevitable that they will also compete with each other. Doing business in a foreign country is like a duck paddling the water. There is no secret to success. You can only learn from failure and find a way to succeed.
The Taiwanese staffs in Vietnam also constantly encouraged us during the interview. Young people should bravely step out of their comfort zone and accept challenges. Don’t just live on the island of Taiwan, but go out and see more Look. Don't always look at the world from Taiwan, which is too narrow, but look at Taiwan from the world, so that you can look to the future and see more possibilities. Ability + physical strength + courage + execution, it is not so far away from achieving the goal. When encountering difficulties, always look at it negatively, but turn negative emotions into positive ones, so as to effectively solve the problem. Painful learning is the most effective and fastest way, after all, as the saying goes, "failure is the mother of success".

Day 2: Hanoi Humanities and Social University
In the morning, I first went to Renshe University. According to Professor. Ku, Renshe University is to Vietnam like National Taiwan University is to Taiwan. It is a very top school! For us, Human Society University is indeed a shocking education. In the morning, I was told that I would meet and talk with the students of the Human Resources and Social Security Institute in English. I didn’t expect to have such a formal occasion. We sat at the long table of the conference to introduce ourselves and ask questions. I was really nervous at first. Once you go abroad, you will find out how important English is. Professor Ku’s entire speech was in English, and he also gave us a useful class on East Asian relations. Human and Social University is worthy of being the top school, and the questions raised by the students are all straight to the point.

Da-Ya Wire and Cable Factory
The general manager enthusiastically explained the company's operation status, future plans and cooperation with government policies. I was also surprised that Cheng-Da University's (NCKU) famous green buildings were built by Da-Ya Company, because I heard about it when I worked in Tainan in the past. Cheng-Da's green building was not expected to be built by a wire and cable company that ordinary people might think would cause pollution. From this, it can be seen that Da-Ya hopes to reverse its image and achieve sustainable operation through the development of environmental protection and green energy business. I think This is a very foresighted company strategy. After all, only blindly developing the industry and ignoring environmental protection will only consume the resources of the company itself and the factory environment, and will only result in a lose-lose situation in the end.
Jiang (Department of Political Economy, National Sun Yat-Sen University)
What I learned the most from this trip to Vietnam is that I made a lot of friends. Just like Taiwanese, Vietnamese are simple, hospitable, and treat guests with infinite warmth. Trung Văn Hoàng, who is studying at the University of Humanities and Social Sciences, although I only had a brief conversation with him for ten minutes, he treated me like a good buddy, and even took me to bars in Vietnam, which enriched my nightlife in Vietnam. Thu Hiền is a good friend I met at the University of Foreign Studies. It was also a short-term acquaintance, but she was willing to sacrifice her free time to introduce me to Hanoi. In just a few days in Vietnam and just a few minutes of conversation, I can make friends with some warm and hospitable Vietnamese, which is probably my biggest gain these days. The seven-day visit gave me a glimpse into the beautiful country of Vietnam. I am very fortunate to be able to participate in this exchange. Whether it is in business, academic, or interpersonal, I have gained a lot. In just a few days, I have a lot of memories, and I look forward to participating in such a meaningful visit to Southeast Asia next time.
During this visit, I really learned a lot. Some are from Taiwanese and some from Vietnamese. There seem to be many similarities between the two in terms of culture. There is a big difference in the number of employees who go to Taiwan and Vietnam, and this is what I observed most often when I was in Vietnam. There are many overseas migrant workers in Taiwan, but some Taiwanese are not very friendly to them. Even employers may not respect them. However, Taiwanese businessmen in Vietnam respect and treat Vietnamese employees in factories well. Eating at the same restaurant with them and adjusting to cultural differences. After visiting all the companies, I think I admire these Taiwanese businessmen overseas even more. In order to work in an unfamiliar country, the process of setting up a company may be tough, and even the smallest food, clothing, housing and transportation problems must be overcome. These attitudes towards employees and such persevering personalities can only be understood and learned through personal contact with them, so I think this trip is very worthwhile. These days of study is not just searching for articles at home; the valuable knowledge must be obtained by going out to the local area.
During the visit, the Taiwanese businessmen we contacted all said that the reasons why they can attract them to set up factories are because: Vietnam has a very good investment environment, political stability, good public security, low wages, easy access to venues, simple environment, and similar culture. Their fingers are slender and nimble, and the Vietnamese are deeply influenced by Chinese Confucianism, disciplined, diligent and easy to teach. Compared with other Southeast Asian countries, their nationality and characteristics are loved by many investment entrepreneurs. I believe that in the near future, Vietnam will be able to catch up with China and become one of the leaders in ASEAN.
十四、 陳O維(國立中山大學企業管理學系三年級)
Chen (Department of Business Administration, National Sun Yat-Sen University)
The next morning we went to Hanoi University of Humanities and Social Sciences, and in the afternoon to Hanoi University of Foreign Studies. The students in these two schools are very different. I chatted a lot with my classmates from Social University, including:
1. Vietnamese students’ thoughts on their dream careers , Vietnam's current student unions are more likely to go to Non-Government-Organizations to provide services or to have stable jobs in factories.
2. Women are more oppressed in the workplace, and will need to be pressured by family and supervisors, so there may be a glass ceiling problem in promotion.
3. The opinions of Vietnamese students on Taiwanese businessmen or foreign capital are not rejected by middle and high school intellectuals, but they are willing to accept them and hope to promote the infrastructure and development of Vietnam. The working class is replaced, so different complaints are inevitable and ignored.
4. The education problem is also a cramming-style teaching problem in Vietnam, and the quality of the teachers is not very good, which is why most of the students will want to work in education-related NGOs in the future.
5. The common sport in Vietnam is soccer, which is very different from Taiwan.
